Two days ago I had gone to drop my friend off at class and then headed over to check my air pressure at the air station we have on our campus. When I had gotten there I had left my keys in the ignition and had just got out to check my tires because my air pressure light was on inside my car. When I had gotten out I had closed my door and then began checking my tires.
When I had finished checking my tires I went to go back inside my car but realized my car locked on its own since the keys were in the ignition. The feeling inside me was like I had swallowed my stomach and I felt like a stupid person. I went around the car and checked to see if any of the doors were opened but no luck there.
I was so pissed off because I had to meet my friends that were going off to Korea to serve for 3 years. I went to reach for my phone to let them know I wouldn’t be able to meet till later that night, but when I reached for my phone it wasn’t there. I had left my damn phone inside the car because I had it plugged into my stereo to play my music. It was a lose/ lose situation.
I had tried to find someone that had a cell phone so I could call AAA. It took me about a half hour for me to find someone that had a cell phone and I immediately called AAA to come unlock my car. It was 6:10 p.m. and all I could see was my phone going off the hook from my friends calling me. I couldn’t call them because the student’s phone I had needed to get to class.
When I talked to the operator at AAA, she asked me what I needed and what my situation was. I had explained to her that I left my keys in the ignition and was locked out of the car. I also explained to her that I was calling from a student’s cell phone and that it wasn’t mine. She then had asked me for my number to follow up with the service afterwards. It was like she was more worried about getting me to follow up with them rather than just get someone there to unlock my car.
I had told her my location and then she told me that it would be 45 minutes or less for someone to be there. I had thanked her and then the waiting began. I was freezing my butt off because it was in the teens outside and I only wearing a hoodie and jeans. I also couldn’t leave my car because the on-campus parking services would give me a ticket if they found the car sitting there.
As I was standing there, I saw my phone lighting up like a firework with a bunch of phone calls and text messages. I couldn’t believe my luck and was absolutely pissed at myself. A half hour had passed and I was anxious because AAA should have been there soon. Next it was an hour and no one had shown up yet. I should have told the operator that my car was running and maybe someone would have been there quicker.

It was a hour and a half when the AAA worker arrived to me. He had told me that he was sorry for the slow response time and apparently dispatch described the location where I was completely wrong. I had told them that I was near the Duke Centennial building on the side facing the athletic fields. Dispatch had told the guy that I was on one of the roads around campus near an athletic building. I was thinking to myself how hard are these people’s jobs that they can’t communicate correctly.
It wasn’t like any of them couldn’t speak English, it was that they probably were uneducated people with a low paying job. After my entire experience was over I never even received a follow up phone call, but when I checked my phone I had 2 missed calls from AAA. What part of I didn’t have my phone didn’t they understand when I told them. Obviously all of it! AAA is helpful to have but don’t expect a quick response unless you are in an emergency situation!! Horrible Experience!!
