You’d be hard pressed to drive through any neighborhood and not see an ADT security sign somewhere. ADT has become one of the largest home security and protection service related companies in the United States. Unfortunately they’ve put revenues above all else. They have one of the worst customer service and billing reputations out there.
ADT has been fined and otherwise penalized in many states for abusive billing and sales practices. Just look them up on the internet and you will see thousands of complaints and some of these will blow your mind. This is basically what happened to me. ADT was preinstalled in the house that I purchased and so I decide to start up their service. This ended up being a huge mistake, but anyway, I and their sales rep negotiated and we agreed at a price of $40 per month. The sales rep stated that it would never go up during the period of the contract. The contract in question was for three years.

Well just about six or seven months into the contract ADT sent me a letter stating that my price was going to increase. I called ADT customer service to tell them that that was not in my policy. I signed and agreed with their sales representative that my price was going to be exactly what we agreed to – the $40 per month. I told him that my sales representative stated that for the period of my contract of three years the price could not increase at all.
Then I found out that when you look at the contract and the small print which of course the sales representative did not go over or apparently even adhere to, stated that ADT has the right to increase your rates a few months into the contract. So their sales representatives completely lie to you and then ADT doesn’t care and adheres to their contract. They were even going to listen to me at all.
I even filed a complaint with the local Better Business Bureau and ADT laughed at them. Only after several responses and the fact that I found that ADT was in the news in California for all sorts of bad business and billing practices did they finally relent and let me out of the contract. Apparently ADT had a bunch of unethical executives there that are all about the bottom line profits. They completely forgot about servicing customers and trying to get repeat business. They look as these contracts as a guaranteed payment for a period of three years or more and they didn’t care if they provided a service or not during that time.

Well, in the end ADT is now hurting from their unethical behavior as they have more complaints than all the other home security companies put together. ADT has also had to pay more fines and faced more penalties and similar than all the other security companies put together. That is a terrible record and a company that I definitely cannot recommend to anyone. I advised you completely stay away from the three letters ADT! When they come calling run the other way – don’t walk!



I signed up for the system after a rep of ADT gave a sales pitch to my senior Mobilehome Park. There were a couple dozen of us who signed up. The sales person did not say one way or another we could not use cell phones for the system although he knew I did not have a landline anymore. The day the tech came to install my system he told me I hade to have a landline. I got the landline for $50.00 a month. A new tech came back and installed system
One of the main reasons we chose ADT was the carbon monoxide detector. When they came out and installed the equipment, I asked where was the CM detector. The tech said in was in with the smoke alarm. Seriously? I’m 70 years of age; do I LOOK like I was born yesterday? It took moths, but finally someone came and installed the CM detector.
Then the sign. We want the SIGN because it probably does more good than the service. There were supposed to me window decals. It took 5 months to get a sign.
Then I lost my retirement income. I called ADT to beg for mercy. I spoke with someone who said she would have someone call me and under the circumstances they could probably work something out. The woman then told me that I COULD have service with my cell phone for another $5.00 a month!
What part about I do NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THE SERVICE DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?
That was April 15, 2011. Today, June 21, 2011 I received a collection letter from The Lotus Agency. I called ADT only to find out that they don’t really have my “account” it is now with ASC, who I have never even HEARD of. Every piece of paper in my file is ADT. No one said anything about ASC when I called. Now ASC, with whom I have never had any communication, wants me to pay them $1229.70
Is a complete scam or what? Seven on our Side here I come!
Oh, ADT did set up an appointment to come remove the equipment tomorrow. Interesting, that ADT is coming to get the equipment but my service is with ASC? What is THAT about? ADT can’t seem to make up its mind who or what they are. They informed me that they would not patch the sheet rock. Do I CARE; just get the junk OUT of the house! Disgruntled in Petaluma!

Does anyone have a positive experience with ADT? Thinking of working there, and I am a completely ethical and honest person. I would not be able to lie or not explain the contracts, but I have been out of work for 2 years in December, and I need work, but perhaps ADT is not the place. I could not handle the stress of lying, cheating, poor service and bad billing practices. Thanks.
Does anyone know how we all can get legal aid from a smart lawyer that can find a loop hole in their contract. It seems there should be something in the law to protect the consumers and NOT let these “greedy lurches” get away with all this. I for one am not going to pay them. At our age, who cares about credit!!
They are straight liars! First, ADT bills me every month but turns out it’s “defender security” that I’m doing business with. Which makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with ANYONE and get ANY kind of help! I’ve been in my contract one year and I’m moving into a new house that has an ADT system installed already. They want to charge me for installation AND start my contract over. What on earth makes them thing that I want to continue to do business with a company that I can’t even get in touch with and when I do, no one can answer anything because they’re always passing the buck between companies?????? If you want a security system, DON’T GET ADT.
ADT FAILED US and many others!!! If you want to have peace of mind for your family, PLEASE stay away from ADT!!! ADT failed to dispatch fire rescue when my smoke detectors started going off. After my house was totalled and 2 loving pets perished, the Fire Dept Investigator checked my alarm system. Everything was operational on MY end. He called FROM MY BURNT HOUSE and asked ADT why they didn’t dispatch help. They claim they never got the alarm. 4 days later, ADT took out my next month’s payment. 3 1/2wks later, not a word from ADT. Oh, I guess a lot of people were screwed by ADT. Yeah I think so. They’re sayin that the alarm system is absolutely free, but it’s not. they will charge you $99 for activation and eventually you will pay a much higher amount for the 36-month contract.
