Being a student in college, I needed a way that I would be able to check my email, view PowerPoint slides, listen to music, or just play games and relax between classes. One day I went home and did my research on what technology was out there and discovered upon the 8 GB iPod Touch. During my college career, I have had multiple classes cancelled where I could have been home an hour sooner, but didn’t know due to not having access to the internet. I have also been in class where the professor has decided to go on to the next chapter but didn’t have any of the PowerPoint posted on Moodle (online classroom program). I was able to use my iPod Touch and view the PowerPoints right there in class.
Another use of the iPod that I enjoy is being able to listen to all of my music which includes thousands of songs at my finger tips. Having the stress load in college, I love to be able to listen to my music in between classes to distress me from a rough day or just to help me concentrate on homework as I work in the library.
Another feature of the iPod touch is the ability to download games and programs from the iTunes store. The numbers of applications that are available for download are in the millions and range from document based applications, to games of all types, and social networking programs such as Facebook, AIM, Tweeter, MySpace, etc.
An amazing application that I have downloaded is called Text Free. I am able to text anyone as long as I have internet connection. When I open the application, it is exactly like I have a cell phone in my hands. I don’t have to worry about what network I have nor what my texting plan includes. The best part of having this application is not worrying about the loss of reception in some of the buildings on my campus. I am always able to have contact someone in case of an emergency, which makes me feel safe in the end.
Being able to know that I have the internet at my finger tips is an amazing feeling! I am able to go online whenever I need to and able to check my email at any second I want. The easy email home button makes it easy as 2 taps of your finger and your accounts are open. Being able to have my email at my finger tips gives me the ability to email my professors or to my family and friends.
Another application that is very useful to me is called Pageonce Bills. This application allows me to view my bills and see when they are due. I am also able to login to my account and pay my bills if need be. The best part of this application is being able to view the categories my utilities fall under and where my money falls under those categories.
One of the downfalls to the Apple iPod Touch, which I consider one of the biggest, is the ability to have internet when wireless networks are available. This is where a cell phone such as the iPhone will come in handy due to having the 3G network to access the web. Some of the applications that are available require access to the internet in order to even function properly.
Another downfall to the Apply iPod is the high cost. The smallest iPod includes 8GB of memory and runs for $199, next 32GB running for $299, and finally the largest includes 64 GB and runs for a stunning $399! Having a high costs definitely shows consumers it is a brilliant and high tech gadget, but doesn’t allow many college students to buy this spectacular iPod.
A third downfall to the Apple iPod touch is the lack of ability to open any java enhanced documents, Adobe based documents, nor Adobe Flash player to view a lot of videos. Not being able to open these important files really gets me frustrated because most of your daily activities run from these programs. This is definitely another major flaw Apple didn’t get right when creating the iPod Touch.
A latest feature that Apple has released for the iPod touch is the iOS 4. This operating system includes being able to multi-task, create folders for your applications, create and edit playlists right on your iPod touch, iBooks, and also home screen wallpaper. It also includes Bluetooth keyboard support, view photos based on who’s in them and the location they were taken at, send apps to friends and family, and also allows you to be connected the Wi-Fi internet connection even when the iPod is in sleep mode. I believe this was one of the needed upgrades that should have come with the iPod initially, but this is where I believe Apple is starting to lose their seniority in leading the technology field.
Overall, I rate the iPod touch as an amazing handheld mini-computer that I am able to access my email, view PowerPoint slides, listen to music, or just play games and relax between classes. I would recommend anyone to buy the Apple iPod Touch and enjoy the many advantages and advances in technology it has to offer! Even though the price is high, you can surely know that your money is being well spent!!

I had an iPod touch and traded it in for a 3g iPhone. I also got an iPad (was a birthday present from my rich uncle). The iPod touch was great, but the iPhone and iPad can do so much more. I can read online books and more. Apple and Steve Jobs have really made some interesting and amazing technological devices. One can only wonder what Steve Jobs will think of next.
