Craigslist – Should They Be Allowed to Host “Pet Sales”??

How many of you place items up on the Craigslist website?  Out of all of the categories for the items people put up on Craigslist the one that makes me most angry is the pet category.  I like to go on craigslist and see what items are on there.  The items that I’m most interested in looking at when I go on Craigslist is the furniture and sometimes the free items.  I think that it is completely wrong for people to put up their pets on the internet.

Another thing that makes me angry, besides the fact that people are actually allowed to put their pets up for sale on craigslist, is that it states on the site “No pet sales or breeding please—Re-homing with small adoption fee OK”  I’m sorry but a “small adoption fee” sure sounds like someone selling their pet.  And how does the owner of craigslist know that the people “adopting” these pets from their site aren’t going to use them for breeding or if they are even going to treat them humanely?

I think the owner of craigslist needs to rethink their pet category and make it only available for actual pet adoption centers.  I know pet adoption centers and rescue centers use craigslist to let people know what pets are available.  I would like to see the pet section on craigslist being used strictly by those pet adoption centers.

I also don’t agree with the fact that people are allowed to charge other people a re-homing fee when they don’t even take the animal to the vet before they try to get rid of them.  I don’t think that people have the right to charge others for their animals if they really didn’t spend that much money on them in the first place.  I think that people are just stingy with their money and feel that if someone can go to an adoption center and have to pay $50 at the least for a pet, that charging someone $25 for their animals would be no big deal.

But in reality, it’s not ok for them to charge people for the animal until they know for sure that there is nothing wrong with them.  I make this comment because sometimes when people receive an animal from someone else, who says there is nothing wrong with the animal, there usually ends up being something wrong with the pet and there is nothing that the buyer can do about it after all is said and done.

If you agree that craigslist should not have a public pet category on their website put your thoughts down here and let me know what you think!

No, Craigslist should put an end to pet sales on their website. This is where dog fighters buy their baiting dogs – it is cruel and mean. Do not allow this animal abuse.

Well I guess if they are going to allow prostitutes to post their seedy advertisements on there that I guess they have to allow pet sales also. I bought a few things through craigslist, but there’s some pretty sleazy and shady characters on there so you definitely have to be careful.

Why not? If I want to sell a pet or similar I should be allowed to do it in my local paper, Pennysaver, Craigslist, etc… I do not run a illegal puppymill and so I don’t see why I can’t sell pets for some extra income on Craigslist.

Observation!! you can sell a 10k horse or a 5k bull you can be a prostitute and peddle your wares, why cant I attempt to find a home for my beautiful goldie puppy. I have tried the newspaper paid quite alot and did not get one viable nibble. We only breed once a generation becuase we want to keep our bloodline going, usually friends and family buy our puppies. We always keep one ourselves. We dont sell to make money even, just defray the vet bill. Even if someone did want to make money what is so terrible about that. I breed very selectively and just because others dont, you want to penalize me. To say that you cant sell on craigslist because the dogfighters will use it is crap. Bad people will always find a way. I am intelligent enough to screen and monitor people who might be interested in my puppy.

I think its crap that theres no pet section. I live in wichita kansas. I have tried to find an animal for the 4 kids in my house. I went to the humane society, and they are either way over priced, or the animal has so many problems.

For christmas I have been vigorously searching for a small dog for my girlfriend, and the kids. A papillon to be precise. But I waste time continually checking the same places. I’m not a dog fighter or a breeder, at all. Just a boyfriend who wants to make his family happy.

75% of all animals that come to our humane society are euthanized within 3 days after arrival per an employee of the center. That breaks my heart! There is no reason the animal should die, simply because their owner couldn’t take care of them.

and by the same employee I was told that the biggest reason people say they drop their animals off is because they couldn’t find a new home for them. Craigslist would be perfect! the owner could see face to face who the animal is going to, and vice versa, the new owner could see where the animal is coming from. And like mentioned before, screening somebody isn’t difficult.

And as far as people making profit, welcome to the world we live in. do you think that shiny new Dodge Viper ACR cost them 110 thousand dollars to make? Most certainly not. Do I think a purebred dog is worth hundreds, even thousands? that’s a definite no. but will I pay it to make my family happy? Yes. Its how things work.

Dog fighters still will find their dogs whether craigslist has pets or not. Breeders will find dogs whether or not craigslist has them. More importantly, animals will be unfairly euthanised more often, at least here in wichita because people could not find new homes on their own.

    thank you for your time.

I personally do not see anything wrong with placing your dog on craigs list. Why shouldn’t you be allowed? If you talk to the person on the phone first, meet them in a public place with your dog (animal) and of course I believe before you release any animal to someone else you should see and visit their house. If they don’t agree with that, then they don’t get the animal. I also believe if someone pays for an animal they are more likely to really want it and care for it. You should always be upfront about your animal with people, such as if there are any behavioral problems etc. I am not sure I understand why you are so upset about craigs list allowing people to list their animals for re-homing.

    Thanks!
