Do you have a cat that you are trying to find a healthy and not so expensive cat food to feed them with? My parents actually just adopted a new cat and they are trying to find a food that has something other than corn or some sort of by-product of meat as the first ingredient. This however, is harder than they thought it would be. Turns out the food that they have been feeding all of the other cats that they have had throughout the years is one of the foods that has corn as the first ingredient.
This typically means that this is not the greatest food for your cat, because it doesn’t provide enough protein and nutrition. It is also harder to find a food that is healthy for your cat if it is strictly an indoor cat. Indoor cats tend to eat a lot of food because they sometimes get bored. They also don’t get a lot of exercise because usually indoors they don’t have a lot of room to run around.
There are tons of different cat food brands including, Purina, 9 Lives, Special Kitty, Friskies, Blue and Authority. All of these brands have indoor formulas available for your indoor cat’s needs. The problem with most of these brands including all but Blue and Authority is that the first ingredient is either corn or chicken/turkey by-product. Like I said before, this food is not good for your cat.
Moving on to Blue and Authority, they are two of the healthiest cat foods that you can buy. The only negative about the healthy cat foods, just as healthy human foods, is that they are so expensive for such a little amount of product. Both Blue and Authority have a higher percentage of protein than the other brands of cat food. However, one is better than the other, because it has more protein and is also cheaper.
The brand that is better for your cats is Authority. Authority has about 15% protein in the food whereas Blue only has about 14%. Authority is also about $10 cheaper than Blue. There are other reasons that you may need to change your cat’s food as well, they may get a lot of hairballs, or they may not digest the food the right way and end up spitting up whole, expanded pieces of the food. This may be a health problem or it may be because of the type of food that you are using.
The brands Friskies, Purina, 9 Lives, and Special Kitty can be found at Walmart, Target, and even Petsmart and Petco. This makes it more likely for people to want to buy these less healthy brands of food as compared to Blue and Authority that can only be found at Petsmart or Petco. Most people don’t like going to a bunch of different stores to get everything that they need especially when they are already tired from work and whatever else they have going on. So just grabbing a bag of cheap cat food from Walmart or Target is a lot easier than stopping at another store.
My parents were having problems with the new cat getting a lot of hairballs. They then went out and bought a special hairball formula food, and it turned out that it worked out very well. Hairball formula foods are good for medium and long haired cats. This is true because they like to clean themselves and if you have other cats, especially younger ones, they will clean them like crazy too! Having a hairball formula food rather than hairball formula treats will have a much better effect on your cat’s health. This is true because they don’t need to eat as much of the food as they will the treats.
Overall, I myself learned a few things from my parent’s experience. I learned that just because your cat likes their cat food doesn’t mean it is healthy for them. So, check the ingredients and the nutritional facts on your bag of cat food to ensure that your cat is getting the greatest amount of protein and nutrition that they possibly can!
