Leaving the Myrtle Beach area was difficult enough because of the beauty of the sites and access to tourist attractions and the ocean. This was my first trip there and when we arrived, I was anxious to see everything. My gas tank was nearing 1/4 tank but I was not interested in making the stop to get the lowest price. So, when it was time to leave, I decided I would watch the signs and see if I could beat the $2.39 low price I saw on the main drag of the 501 Interstate. By the time I was heading up towards Marion, SC. my tank was low and I knew I would have to settle for the next stop or walk to get gas.

No worries, my wife sees a sign for Sparkys. The establisment advertises on this sign, “the lowest price on gas in town”. At this stage, I am thinking I really hit the jackpot. The establishment’s signs are not hard to miss. They are a bright yellow with colorful writing and direct, to the point advertising. Continuing down highway 501, you see why the signs are short and to the point. By the time you reach the actual location, you have passed at least 20 more of these colorful yellow signs. Each one advertises another service the place offers. You can get cheap souvenirs, gas, fireworks, snacks, drinks, and so much more.

I am excited to see Sparkys and the signs definitely have your interest by the time you roll into the parking lot. Now, it’s like 8:45pm at night on a Sunday. But surely a place like Sparkys with all this advertising is a busy place any time of day or night. There it is, let’s pull in! Hmmm … Where are all the cars? Is this place even open? The gas pumps are clearly labeled, “Please pay for your gas purchase before pumping”. I have credit card, no problem. But again, are they open. I see no sign of anyone but decide there must be someone in the upper corner entrance where it stated, “Pay for your gas here”. But not having to pay cash, I try my card. Indeed, it goes through and away I pump. Lowest price in town? Not at $2.49 per gallon. My gamble did not pay off for me.

My wife was hoping to have a look inside to see if they have any souvenirs or fruits (we passed a ton of stands on the trip in). But no other section of this huge establishment is open. Sparkys and all the hype is closed with the exception of the cheapest gas in town. So cheap, that I am the only other car in the place.

I don’t see an official website for the place. All that advertising and no Internet or Web presence?

I will have to read more about Sparkys and maybe next time visit during the early afternoon. Perhaps, my perception will be better of Sparkys. But at this time because of the closed signs, lack of traffic, and “medium” gas prices, I have to say I am disappointed in Sparkys! No fireworks shooting off for me after anticipation the size of a kids eyes as they wait for 4th of July Fireworks to start!

Last time I drove down to Myrtle Beach they still had the highest gas prices around! I would never recommend anyone to stop into this dump!

Still the highest prices around, and they put a hold on your credit card. $26.00 on a $3.32 purchase. (on a motorcycle) Won’t stop there again, even if it means pushing the bike or hitching.
