Stein Mart versus T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Ross’s discount stores – which is best for buying clothes?

Stein Mart review

I used to go to Stein Mart but then found I could get more of what I wanted for cheaper at TJ Maxx, Ross's and Marshalls.

I used to go to Stein Mart years ago but I noticed they started to specialize in close for older people (the 40 to 70 age range).  When I would go into the men’s area the typical clothes the 20-year-old or even 30 year old wears were getting rarer and rarer as they were being replaced mostly with golfing related clothes.

Stein Mart also has and always has had a much larger business clothes area than the other three stores do listed above.  But then a friend of mine introduced me to a T.J. Maxx that was about 10 miles away.  I could get virtually the same clothes at Stein Mart for about half the price that Stein Mart charges.  Plus they tended to have the clothes that I actually like and wear all the time.

I can find everything from polo shirts (which Stein Mart has tons of golf polo shirts, but they are not the latest fashions for younger adults) to fashionable T-shirts, expensive label jeans at huge discounts and more at any of the three sister stores T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Ross’s.  Now, I deftly have to say Stein Mart does tend to have a better selection of more expensive clothes, but a lot of their clothes are not things that I would wear.

I don’t play golf and I don’t have a closet full of different colored striped polo shirts.  I like the latest fashions by companies like Affliction, Diesel, Lucky Brand and more.  These I can find in a pretty good selection at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.  Sometimes Ross’s has a pretty good selection of these also.  Each one tends to be a little different.

I have found that Ross’s tends to be best for buying name brand shoes like Timberlands, doctors, Merrill, Nunn Bush and even Asics and Nike sneakers.  Marshall’s can also be good for shoes especially for young children.  I can always find great deals on all sorts of brands of shoes and sneakers for young children there.  For women’s shoes my wife likes Marshall’s the best of these (she also likes Off Broadway but they tend to be considerably more expensive).

Would’ve also found though is depending on your location sometimes the T.J. Maxx stores better or sometimes one of the other two Marshals or Ross’s is better.  It all depends on what you’re looking for and yet keep in mind each stores a little bit different.  Within a 10 mile radius I have 3 T.J. Maxx stores and one is really nice, one is okay and one looks like the Salvation Army store with clothes hung haphazardly everywhere.

So my advice is to take a look at all them and see which works best for you.  My favorite, due to its proximity, is the Marshalls store which is only a mile from my house.  I like the fact that I can go there and buy big name brand designer jeans for around $20 a pair or less sometimes.  I can buy the top fashion shirts for around $10 apiece and I get great deals on shoes and sneakers too.
